Food Webs and Ecosystems

Producers

The sun is in the middle of all food webs because it is our Earth's source of energy. The organisms closest to the sun in the web are called producers. Green plants are the main producers on our Earth. In the food web, the producers go through photosynthesis, getting food in three steps:
        1. Using the sun's energy, carbon dioxide and water, the producers make their own food.
        2. This food created by the producers is a sugary substance called glucose.
        3. The organisms then release oxygen into the air for other species to breathe.

The main producer for all of our ecosystems is the sun because of the central role it plays in releasing energy to the rest of the species. But there are other producers that contribute to feeding consumers such as grasses, string beans and elm trees. These other producers take energy from the sun and turn it into food for the consumers.

The elm tree in the first picture and the green beans in the second are producers that go through photosynthesis
in order to create nutrients for the consumers who feed off them.
